I remember a year after I’d started my job, I was offered the chance to train new people to the same position. I didn’t think that I was capable. I remembered how I initially struggled in the role, so I refused. But my supervisor insisted that I do it, so I took a chance and I’m glad that I did. That opportunity allowed me to develop and extend patience to people.
That memory came to mind today, and I realized something we often forget: patience and encouragement matter more than we think.
So, be patient with others. Be encouraging. Your support can ease the pressure someone feels to get everything right. You give them freedom to make mistakes, to learn, and to grow. Whether or not it produces lasting results isn’t always the point. Even if someone gives up or doesn’t change, your effort isn’t wasted. Your capacity for patience grows in the process.
