I like that a new month can feel like a new opportunity to start over, start again, even as you are continuing. It creates the illusion of a blank slate, as if you can scrape away the past and start fresh. I think this second half offers that opportunity.
I’m beginning to realize that it’s the passing of time we should be concerned about, but how we spend it. I do feel a push to pay attention to what I do with my time, and whether I’m utilizing it as I intended for the fulfillment of my goals. Learning a new language has shown me the power of small, consistent efforts. Sometimes the best way to achieve is to slow down; consistent action over time does yield results. It’s something that I need to put into practice consistently. Having goals is great, you have something to aim for. However, one of the traps I kept falling into was trying to get to the destination “faster.” But when you try to get there faster, you sometimes cut corners, leading to unnecessary errors that can push you back to the starting line when you feel that you should be close to the finish line. And life happens; if not by your own hand, then something beyond your control pushes you back.
Even with this in mind, I think we’re doing our best. I think where we’ve exerted too much pressure, let’s take a moment to step back, reassess, breathe.
I think if you’re in the thick of things, the idea of a blank slate is laughable. Life’s hardships can sincerely hold you by the nose, pulling you whichever way they choose on any given day. But I’m reminded that a new beginning can come from trust, not circumstance. I was encouraged this morning reading a scripture of a nobleman who sought Jesus to come heal his son because his son was dying. (John4:47). But Jesus didn’t go with him, but instead told him that the son was healed, and the man believed it. And reading about this encounter highlighted the importance of trusting Jesus, trust Him at his word. Trusting him offers a new slate of sorts; where you go to him to fix a desperate problem that you have, and by His words He offers you comfort, a solution. And best of all, peace.
Little by little you’re doing the best you can. Continue to do so. Little by little, better strategies will come along. Little by little, because you decided to trust God, your small efforts will unfold into great accomplishments. You’ll find that you didn’t have to run helter-skelter attempting to get to your destination faster. You’ll get there; and knowing God, you’ll get there bearing all sorts of treasures you never imagined. Take a moment to breathe. To pray. To ask for your need. Receive peace for the days ahead.
